Parking: Even though there is ample parking downtown, I found that when the St. Luke’s Gala and Rodeo were being held, parking attendants wanted proof of attendance for the event before they would allow parking. I had been going to meet family for dinner, and since I was not attending an event, I was turned away from 3 parking garages, including HR Block and the one next to the Live Theater. Luckily KC Southern would take my money and let me park, no matter my reason for invading downtown.

I just hope the powers that be, will see fit to make parking for first come, first serve, otherwise make it clear that reservations are needed for the empty parking garages

My family attended “Walking with Dinosaurs” this past weekend at the Sprint Center. After the show we walked across the street and had been standing on the sidewalk along the railing for less than a minute when a female security officer approached us and informed us that we could not “just stand and look” we asked if we could enter with our five year old son. She looked at her watch (it was 8:45PM) and said that we could enter until 9:30PM when only 21 and above could enter. As we approached a male security officer at the entrance, he looked at us and said “where do you think you’re going.” I stated that we wanted to look around to which he then looked at my son and stated, “not with him your not.” Our first experience with the new Power and Light District was not at all pleasurable and this is not the first comment we’ve heard about the same problem. It’s nice that Kansas City has the district, bringing business to downtown but as residents of KC MO and KC KS, we won’t be back to the district anytime soon. Management may want to give their employees classes in basic etiquette before they place them in public.

The first time I went to the P&LD was during March Madness. My friend and I were at one of the bars having a drink when a man came up to me and said I had to leave because someone told him I was in the restroom getting sick. I did just get back from using the restroom, but I didn’t get sick. I went stright in and stright out. I wasn’t even drunk. I told the man that it wasn’t me. He didn’t care and still made me leave.

I went to the P&L court yard tonight, not my first time. I ve enjoyed my previous times of going. I went to the Flying Saucer before hand then I was going to Shark Bar, when I get to the security check point for the court yard I had an issue. The security guard looked at me, i was getting my ID ready cause I know i look young, and said my pants were too baggy. I can understand this sort of rule, when enforced properly. This was not that situation, my pants were pulled up, no underwear showing, and they went down to my shoes. Im a big guy so in order to be comfortable I wear bigger pants. But the length isnt anything out of my ordinary attire for work. I offered to pull them up farther and the rude son of a bitch said that I was already denied so he couldnt let me in. I told him that was fine and that I would try a different entrance since he was unable to let me in. Turns out he called to all the entrances with my description and told them to not allow me. I feel completely violated and they lost a customer for life…

Hey, my name is Jamison Jones, I’m 28 years old, work for NBC action news as a production assistant, also I’m African American, have cornrows, and had a terrible time trying to enter the power and light district Friday March 20th, and just wanted to share my experience with you, which I also decided to share with my co-workers here at nbc action news.

I have often driven through Kansas City’s Downtown and seen all the new attractions being built, but I had never actually tried to spend my evening there until last night. I thought this would be a good time to go mainly because of the NCAA Tournament being hosted at the Sprint Center and it was going to be just myself and my girlfriend (not a large group of individuals, which I had heard in the past might have had problems trying to enter). Also 38 the spot and Holly Star was supposed to be hosting an event in the pavilion called “Hangin with Holly” that night.

As I got close to one of the entrances, a white gentleman immediately stopped me and said my shirt was too long. (it’s kind of funny because I thought I had picked out one of my not-so-long shirts to wear). Well I reluctantly turned to my girlfriend and said guess I’ll just have to wear my shirt tucked in for the night. The gentleman looked at me and said I still couldn’t come in. When I started asking why not, he got on his radio and a different black gentleman named Brian came over and explained I only had one chance to show up in proper attire and since apparently I had not done so they would not let me enter, even if my shirt was now tucked in. I then told him I had never visited P&L and was not aware of their particular rules regarding the length of my shirt. The guy shrugged his shoulders and said too bad. Then I asked what if I had been from out of town, is this how they treat visitors..he did not answer. I then mentioned I worked for the station which was hosting the event there tonight which Holly Star worked at. He looked at me with a doubtful expression then asked me to leave. I then thought, well there are multiple entrances, hopefully I could now go to another entrance with my shirt tucked in and gain entry. As soon as I approached another entrance, the KCP&L employee immediately pulled out his radio and asked someone to repeat the description of the “Ejectee” at gate 205. By this time I started getting a clear picture of exactly what was going on. As you can guess, they did not let me in either. By this time I didn’t even want to go in anymore and my girlfriend and I left.

I now see for myself why a good portion of black people don’t get to or want to go to the Power & Light District and I doubt I’ll ever go back. Thanks for taking the time to read about my experience and I understand that there are different opinions about the dress code, but I don’t believe the way myself and my girlfriend were treated down there was right.

B.S. There is no Jamison Jones employed by KSHB Action News. Just another troublemaker.

There MOST certainly is a Jamison Jones employed at KSHB Action News and this story is 100% true. He is a very nice young man and was treated unfairly for NO reason what-so-ever.. so to the above poster “Truthinstead” get your facts straight. Jamison Jones does exist, this story is factual and these events did take place.

    Jamison Jones,
This is Mr. Brown, your old video production teacher from Westport Middle. I had heard of the troubles you had at KCPLD, and your meeting with Kevin Battle. I just want you to know that I am glad to see you reached your dream of working in television, and from your writing, I see that you continue to be the fine young man you have always demonstrated yourself to be.

I know the earlier comment was nearly a year old, but to the person disappointed that they were not allowed to “look around” P & L with their five-year old in tow…the security guard did that to protect your child! Power & Light is no place for children at any hour of the day; it is chock full of extremely intoxicated individuals!

I tried to get into P&L on a weeknight after seeing a movie at the new AMC (which is great btw). My boyfriend had a rip in the knee of his jeans and that was the only problem. The man approached him and told him he couldn’t enter. I asked him why, because the sign said, EXCESSIVELY RIPPED clothing. He just shrugged. I asked him, “what if I was wearing jeans with a rip at the knee?” He grinned and said as a woman he wouldn’t care. I said, “so I can pretty much come in here with my ass hanging out?” And he shrugged and replied, “pretty much.” I know as a woman I shouldn’t yell about anything regarding sexism against men, but come on! I have been to P&L so many time in short dresses to go dancing and none of my female friends or myself never experience anything but getting flirted with by the guards. Is a skanky dress pose more of a threat than a man with a ripped knee in his jeans? Think about it…drunk men plus girl in shirt dress could equal trouble. What trouble does a rip only in your knee cause? There are paid women at Tango sed who dance in bikinis and that is more appropriate? Give me a break.

The crux of your writing whilst appearing agreeable in the beginning, did not sit properly with me personally after some time. Someplace throughout the sentences you actually managed to make me a believer unfortunately only for a very short while. I nevertheless have got a problem with your jumps in assumptions and one would do well to help fill in those gaps. In the event that you actually can accomplish that, I would undoubtedly be amazed.

Last night I went to the P and L district for the first time, and I must say I had a great time. The rumors are true about the dress code, signs are posted outside all the bars and clubs. I will be coming back
