My family attended the Big XII basketball tournament in Kansas City Marach 13-16. We ate at the Tengo sed Cantina on Sat afternoon on March 15th. The food was great and the service was fine until a waitress with a tray full of beer and tequila shots was bumped and the tray ended up on my lap along with the contents. My lap, bottom and coat were drenched. The yound lady asked me what she could do for me and I told her they needed to mop up the spillage and I wanted to talk to the manager. The manager came to our table and was very rude and kept repeating “What do you want me to do?)over and over again . My bottom was completely soaked and my coat saturated. The waitress came back and wanted to know if we needed anything and I told her to tell the manager I wanted the meals compt. She returned and said he was not going to do that so in frustration I told her to tell him to get his ass back to the table so I could talk to him. He returned to our table and threatened to call security for me yelling at the waitress and being disorderly and have me evicted. I could not believe what I was hearing from him. The restaurant was very busy and maybe he was stressed, but to handle that situation the way he did was totally uncalled for. Again the food was great but I am not sure I want to go back because of the treatment I received for having beer spilled on me.

I have eaten here twice (both with a work group) and was unimpressed both times. The food is bland. Chips & salsa are NOT complementary (what kind of mexican restaurant does not provide free chips & salsa?). Service is slow. To top things off, I was just reconciling my receipts to my bank statement, and apparently the waitress rounded the tip I left up to the nearest dollar, because my card was charged for more than I signed for. I tried to call the place just now to bring the issue to their attention and have it resolved, but no one bothered to answer the phone. Very frustrated, and will not be going back except to resolve my credit card charge.

This is an update to my prior post. I was finally able to get through and speak with a manager about the credit card situation – he was very friendly and helpful and is handling the situation to my satisfaction. Just wanted to be fair and leave a comment on my “good” experience as well.

After waiting for 1 1/2 hours for a table last Saturday night, our group of six decided to split up so we could eat. We were nice about splitting up only because we were starving! When the waitress came over to our table, she questioned us on how we got seated without menus. She thought we just sat down at her table without permission. Thankfully the hostess was behind her with menus. We ordered drinks from the waitress and she rudely told us that they do not have Bud Light Lime beer. When my husband told her that we had already had one from the bar, she still told us that they didn’t have it and was really snotty about it. (Guess what! They DO have it!) She brought it back and slammed it down on the table. We decided against pushing this issue as we did not want her to sneeze in our food or something! Personally I was so embarrassed as I took the five other people there at my suggestion. Needless to say, it was my second time and LAST time to be there! How sad! The Power and Light needs a good Mexican restaurant! Tengo is not it and after reading some of these other comments, they won’t be around for long.

I was in there Friday June 20th with about 20 people for a birthday party. Also I want you to know that I do understand your bounces put with a lot of stuff. But I also believe they should look at who they are talking to. Again I was in there sitting and drinking with me were the V.P. of JE Dunn and the President and V.P. of the Hispanic Chamber. So this should tell you that I’m a business professonal. My wife and there wives went up on stage to dance, so I stood up to take a picture of them. Within seconds of that picture the dancer of your staff blone hair overall, and red top got down and told your bouncer blonde hair short, straight line beard down his chin and well built that I was video taping them. Your bouncer came over to me and said I’m giving you a warning that you can’t video tape. I told him that I wasn’t video taping anyone I was taking a picture of our wives. So I turn around and he grabbed my arm and said I giving you a warning you do it again and I will through you out personally. I was very embearassed by this type of treatment. I think your bounces need to be a little bit more professonal. I have already changed my dinner plans with the same gentleman and others out of your business because of the way your people acted. I will be calling you personally and from what I can tell I hope you answer the phone. I can tell you this the 20 something crowd will not always be there but the 35 to 50 business people will always spend money with no complaints. I just felt I was treated very rudley. Maybe as a business you care or maybe you don’t.

    Thank You
    for your time.

My husband and I decided that we would take our older children for a bite to eat at P&L for a different experience. We chose this restaurant. We arrived at 330 and found they did not open til 4 because it was Sunday. No big deal. We made ourselves comfortable outside and watched the football game. We went back at 4PM and asked if they were open…we were told yes by the cook. So we stepped inside to wait to be seated. The hostess was rude and bitchy to my child that asked her a question. I let that one slide. But then the waitress came over and acted like we were keeping her from something. (I would have thought she would’ve wanted to earn her tips that shift. Anyway…my husband and I got ticked. So he politely went over and told her to cancel the drink order that we were leaving. She just rolled her eyes and said okay. Needless to say, I sent my family outside and proceeded to rip into the ignorant managers butt! I don’t know how they are still in business after reading these posts, but they are certainly not getting any of my business. I have blogged about my experience and told everyone I know. Word of mouth is a bitch.

i was there last night (8 apr 09) & the food and service was HORRIBLE.. i was very disappointed b/c i had been there a year ago and the food was delicious. i ordered the same thing as before and the quality is about 5 levels below before.. the fish tacos were not edible- the fish fillets were disgusting and cabbage slaw old and flavorless.. the lump crab meat /avocado appetizer was barely edible and the crab meat was questionable.. again- exact opposite of a year ago.. this was around 5 pm and not crowded yet, just starting to fill up.. if they just want to concentrate on being a meat market, stupid bar, then just quit serving food!! it’s simple. the service was atrocious, unprofessional & the whole place seemed to be being run by hungover kids on spring break… my friend and i are were both polite and undemanding.. we have both worked in many restaurants in the past & are empathetic to the service industry .. the topper was to have the server bring us our checks without asking if we wanted anything else.. we were going to order another beer and see if they had the customized guacamole (do they still have that) b/c we were starving but we were so annoyed we left — that place sucks and should close soon

My wife and I decided to try Tengo Sed Cantina in this weekend. After we got our table, I ordered a cup of coffee but was told I had to wait, coffee was not ready. No coffee ready at almost 3:30PM? Well, after we got hot sauce and chips, about 8 minutes later, I got my coffee. I was not asked if I needed cream or sugar. After we ran out of hot sauce, we got a refill which tasted old, fermented, but decided to wait for our orders since we didn’t have time to go somewhere else. I ordered Carnes al Fuego, Steak Skewers with a side order of beans, she had the Tortilla Soup. The first thing my wife said after she got hers was this is a little bland, not much taste, she added some salt. My Carnes al Fuego Steak was ice cold! Anything but fuego! I asked our hostess to touch it who said “Wow that’s cold” and took them back. I figure I could start the “house beans”, but they were cold, like just taken out of a can. I had to add salt and pepper to finis them! Another odd thing, every time I ran out of coffee, the waitress took my cup back to the kitchen? What a freaking joke of a restaurant! You will be out of business soon, if not I hope so!

How old is the management, employees? I went there on St Pattys Day, and had a great, sweet waitress! However I did not eat. I was thinking of applying for a bartending position, but after reading all the negativity makes me reconsider? I am a single parent, maybe help just needs to be older than 25yoa? or someone who knows how to relate to customer service. lol

I agree with the commenters above, charging dollars for tap-water is just ridiculous. Don’t know what to think of the restaurant after all these negatives.

After reading through all the above comments I can’t believe this place is still in business. Seems there is no competition in the area. Offering such a miserable customer service wouldn’t take them very far where I live.

Went there before the Sugarland concert with my wife and a few friends. We got to P&L early (around 5) so we could eat something. Every other place was packed – except Tengo ( I now know why). We hadnt been there before, we like Mexican food, so we decided to try it.

Service is awful. We stood by the hostess table for a good 5 minutues before anyone seated us. We had to wait another 10 to 15 minutes before we even saw our waitress for the first time. Her excuse was “sorry, we’re just really busy”…..when they clearly were not, there were plenty of empy booths. You are understaffed, not busy, there is a difference. After we got done eating our “food” It took her another 15 mintues to take our money – and when she finally came back she miscalculated the change.

The food is something I cooked in 3rd grade. Everything we ate was either a) awful or b) really awful. First off, I know this is a “bar”, but when you are also a Mexican restaraunt you should have free chips and salsa, the fact that we had to pay almost 5.00 for chips and salsa is insane. What’s also insane is that they have an item on the menu called “the guacamole bar”, which is nothing more than a small bowl of awful quacamole for 8.00 – the description talks about “fresh ingredients, mixed by hand at your table”…..BS. Its store bought awfulness that you get to pay 8 bucks for.

For our main course of awfulness we all had their tacos. Two of us had their chicken tacos, one had beef and the other had their steak. The steak tacos actually looked good because they were real handmade tacos with actual incredients besides the meat. The chicken tacos were something you could buy at Sams Club that you take home and deep fry. They were a closed shell taco, almost like an empinada. Inside the taco was just chicken, thats it. No cheese, lettuce, tomato, just bland overcooked chicken. The rice and beans also had no seasoning. The beef tacos were just a deep fried shell with hamburger meat inside – again, no cheese, lettuce, tomato, etc….served with another side of bland, out of a can refried beans and rice.

I understand that people go to this kind of place to get drunk and dance like idiots on Saturday night. But when you are open on a Sunday night and you are advertising your food you should at least have average food to serve to people. This was a far below everage experience and I will never be returning. Its amazing to me that places like this can stay open – I am assuming they are staying open due to the 21 to 24 year old d-bag crowd that P&L thrives on…..or they are just taking a loss each year and being subsidized by my tax dollars. Either way this place needs to close and something else needs to go in there.

Amazing post! Very informative. I visited the link to the hotel menu and it looks great and exciting. Besides the dishes are really mouth watering. Will definitely keep in mind on the very next tour to Kansas city.

What SAC said don’t bode well for this cantina. What kind of services could they possibly offer if they can’t even take calls?

  21. March 20, 2012 at 9:51 am | Permalink

Agreed! I can’t imagine how this business goes on existing with such a poor service! After all these bad comments I have no a great desire to go there!
